Of the 407,765 vaccinated against the coronavirus in Flanders who already received or made an appointment for a third vaccine shot, 54,304 – 13.32 percent – did not show up. Dirk Dewolf, CEO of the Flemish Agency for Care and Health, announced this during a press conference.

It concerns people who received a letter for the booster shot in which a moment had already been determined for them, or who had made an appointment themselves. It may concern people who deliberately ignored the invitation, but also forgotten or unread invitations. So far, 3,066 people have explicitly stated that they do not want a booster shot, on more than a million invitations.
In the meantime, according to the agency, 580,401 booster vaccinations have already been administered in Flanders. This is 8.72 percent of the total population. The Flemish government hopes that by the end of the year 2.5 million Flemish people will have received a third shot. This concerns retirement home residents, healthcare staff, people over 65, people with immune problems and people who have previously received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Flemish Minister of Health Wouter Beke (CD&V) also wants to offer as many people as possible who received the AstraZeneca vaccine an accelerated booster vaccine this year. An Interministerial Conference on Public Health will decide on this on 27 November. This is a fairly large group: 883,000 Flemish people received an AstraZeneca vaccine, of whom 313,000 are not yet 65 years old and are not health care providers.
