The backlog of surgeries accumulated by the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) exceeded three thousand patients, 14 days after the end of June, delegate Desirée Sagarnaga Durante pointed out that there are 1,100 remaining to be scheduled and carried out.
“We hope by the end of June to achieve abatement of the lag, and for this we are doing Saturday consultation and surgery days,” commented the IMSS delegate.
Mainly the surgeries that have been performed are for the gallbladder, hernias, cataracts, knee, hand, shoulder and others that do not represent a greater risk of complications, but that were suspended during the pandemic.
The goal for the Institute is to reduce this lag at the end of the month, however, the delegate acknowledged that there are more needs that have been accumulating since February when the specialty and surgeries consultations were reactivated.
Regarding the number of second-level or specialty consultations, the IMSS presented a lag due to the Covid-19 pandemic of 14 thousand deferred requests, the delegate assured that they were already attended, granting from January to April a total of 32 thousand consultations.
The goal is to accumulate 20 thousand second-level or specialty consultations in the remaining days of the 100-day plan that the institute announced at the end of February of this 2021.
Likewise, he pointed out that 50 thousand detections for breast cancer have been carried out, which includes mammograms and clinical breast examinations, as well as 150 thousand detection actions for people with high blood pressure, during the months of February, March, April and May. .
The IMSS units serve 69.7% of the population with access to a type of social security in Baja California, which represents a great challenge in the number of people requesting services from first to third level.
The IMSS at the most critical point of the pandemic in Baja California had up to 650 people hospitalized with a positive Covid-19 diagnosis, currently the decrease maintains a varying average between 50 and 60 patients throughout the region.
Mexicali concentrates 50% of the patients with Covid-19 in the specialized area of two hospitals, while in Tijuana the auxiliary unit enabled in the parking lot of the Regional General Hospital number 1 is maintained.
