More than 11 million families could be evicted from their homes in the United States

More than 11 million families could lose their homes if the veto on evictions is finally lifted in the United States, where the number of homeowners who are behind on their mortgages has doubled since the beginning of the pandemic, a threat that would affect in particular Black and Hispanic minorities, according to a new report released Monday by the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

With 6% of mortgages in default as of December 2020, currently a total of 2.1 million mortgages are considered “seriously delinquent”, with borrowers more than 90 days late in their payments and, in addition, an estimated 8.8 Millions of renter households are behind on rent, but remain in their homes thanks to waiver measures approved at the federal and state levels for the coronavirus pandemic, according to the CFPB.

While Covid-19 relief programs have reduced the number of foreclosures and evictions so far, the CFPB estimated that 11 million families could be at risk of losing their homes when the measures expire.
