Dengue is a disease transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
MADRID, 18 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Argentine Ministry of Health has confirmed 102,898 positive laboratory cases of dengue so far in 2024, which would already be the largest outbreak in the last 15 years. On Sunday it was reported that at least 79 people have died from the disease since August.
This disease, transmitted by the ‘aedes aegypti’ mosquito, is especially favored by the high temperatures typical of the southern summer and the heat wave suffered by the northern provinces of the country. In addition, the existence of stagnant water after recent storms is also an influencing factor.
The case data usually refer to the dengue season that runs from August to August of each year, with an increase in cases starting in mid-November, although the increase in the first ten weeks of 2024 stands out, which concentrates the 85 percent of cases.
These 102,898 cases in 2024 are 11.3 times more than the cases detected in the same period of 2023, according to the Argentine press.
Outbreaks of chikungunya and cases of co-infection with dengue are also being detected. There are an estimated 21 new cases of chikungunya per week since January, compared to eight in December 2023. The virus is transmitted by the same mosquito that vectors dengue, Zika and yellow fever.
