New York City has passed the 10,000 coronavirus pandemic death mark after local officials estimated more than 3,700 people have died from the disease despite not testing positive for the virus.
The new figures, released by the city’s Department of Health, have increased the number of people who have died in New York to more than 10,000, as well as the overall death toll in the United States from 17% to more than 26,000 deaths.
These figures also highlight the extent of human damage that the virus has caused in the largest city in the United States, where deserted streets are constantly haunted by sirens from ambulances.
New York is considered a global epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic. The city recorded a much higher death rate per capita than in Italy, the country hardest hit by the pandemic in Europe, according to local media.
