More than 100 employees of the Emergency Medical Service (NMPD) have been diagnosed with Covid-19 or the contact person status, Liene Cipule, the director of NMPD, told TV3 in an interview with “900 seconds”.
She acknowledged that the service had now reached the most alarming level, but that did not mean that any of the patients would be left without help and supervision.
Cipule pointed out that NMPD is currently operating in an intensified mode, but the health system faces major challenges, but now the health system ensures that every patient who needs an inpatient is admitted, but the number of places in hospitals is limited. “However, it must be admitted that we are currently facing a dilemma, because we cannot transform the beds for Covid-19 patients indefinitely,” admitted Cipule.
She therefore reiterated her call on the public to maintain rational thinking during illness, as not all patients require hospital treatment. The patient should contact their family doctor and decide with him or her whether hospitalization is necessary or not.
It has already been reported that Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš yesterday, after a meeting with President Egils Levits and Speaker of the Saeima Ināra Mūrniece, revealed to the journalists more detailed proposals on additional restrictions on Covid-19. They must be decided by the government today.
Due to the spread of Covid-19, the Prime Minister will encourage the extension of the state of emergency declared in the country until January 11. Kariņš will encourage to start the students’ winter holidays for the 1st-4th grades already next week or two weeks earlier, at the same time extending the school year in the summer for the respective period.
Also, to reduce the spread of Covid-19, people who do not have symptoms of the disease could be tested, according to the Prime Minister. At the same time, Kariņš emphasized that testing capacity must be significantly increased in order to limit the disease. The war will also prompt an obligation to wear face masks indoors except at home.
There would also be a return to the “two people, two meters” principle practiced in the spring, which would mean that only two people who are not members of the same household could come together, while respecting a distance of two meters. “No visits and visits,” Kariņš emphasized.
He also emphasized that there was a great deal of dissatisfaction and misunderstanding among the public about hairdressers and manicure masters, namely why some people are allowed to work and others are not.
Kariņš will also encourage solving the uncertainty about the operation of retail outlets, as currently the restrictions on this operation are related to the area of retail premises. “It is currently 10,000 square meters, and you might think that it is safer in a small shop. But the danger is the concentration of people in the premises, “the politician explained. He will therefore call for the regulation of the area of sales outlets to be abandoned, while at the same time limiting the number of people who can be present at the point of sale at the same time.
At the same time, it will be encouraged to allow only convenience stores, regardless of their size, to work on holidays.
It is also necessary to actively control the land borders, Kariņš pointed out. “We know that at the airport, or when traveling by rail, all passengers fill in questionnaires and commit to self-isolation,” said the politician, stressing that the same should be done at land borders so that everyone who enters is listed.
