More than 10 million smuggled cigarettes are found in the sea container – in Latvia

Officials of the State Revenue Service (SRS) Customs Board, during the control of sea containers in the territory of the Freeport of Riga, on Thursday, September 24, found more than 10 million smuggled cigarettes, SRS representatives said.

The illegal consignment of cigarettes was detected by customs cynologists with tobacco search dogs.

During customs controls, two tobacco search dogs paid close attention to a sea container. Customs cynologists informed the officials of the Freeport of Riga customs control point about it, and the suspicious container was scanned.

According to the accompanying documents, the container had to contain furniture, but the analysis of the scanned images confirmed the suspicion that the furniture had been used as a cover for illegal cargo – when unloading the container, customs officers found that the furniture boxes were stacked only at the door. cigarette boxes.

A total of 1,064 boxes of “Korona” cigarettes made in Belarus without excise stamps were found.

Controls are still ongoing, so the exact amount of cigarettes will be known once it is completed.

The case materials will be handed over to the SRS Tax and Customs Police Department.
