After Mönchengladbach, the Krefeld Council has now also joined an initiative of the City Council. Düsseldorf is also planning a speed limit in the city. With their entry into the initiative, the cities are demanding more room for maneuver when it comes to speed limits. The federal government must create the legal prerequisites for the municipalities themselves to be able to decide on speed 30 as the maximum speed in urban areas.
37 new 30 zones for Mönchengladbach
The city of Mönchengladbach has announced its entry into the “Livable cities through appropriate speeds” initiative and is committed to setting up additional 30 km / h zones. After coordination between traffic planning, road traffic authorities, police and utilities, 37 new Tempo 30 zones were decided.
The speed limit should apply primarily in residential areas. “We are thus strengthening the living environment and increasing the quality of life. Pedestrians and cyclists in particular benefit from this regulation”, emphasizes city director and head of the transport department Dr. Gregor Bonin.
Tempo 30 as standard on Krefeld streets
The city of Krefeld also joins the municipal initiative for city-friendly traffic of the city council. A majority of the council even wants to introduce Tempo 30 as the standard on urban roads. Because especially on the main roads, car traffic has the most negative effects, according to the city.
It is hoped that the speed limit will have a significant positive impact on noise and pollution for the people living there. The city would also like to participate in possible model projects at 30 km / h.
The CDU and the Greens are calling for more room for maneuver
Also the council factions of the CDU and BÜNDNIS 90 / DIE GRÜNEN ask the city administration to sign the city initiative on behalf of the state capital Düsseldorf. “In Düsseldorf, too, we have to find out again and again that the current traffic regulations repeatedly make it difficult or impossible to implement city-friendly speeds “, it says in the proposal from the CDU and the Greens.
The CDU-led majority of the council in Düsseldorf wants to decide on new Tempo 30 zones, however, on a case-by-case basis. Top priority: You shouldn’t slow down the traffic under any circumstances.
