This project was realized by Live Nation’s sustainability program Green Nation in cooperation with T-Mobile and CES Power. At the beginning of August, the hybrid battery system was used for the first time as part of the Lollapalooza festival in Grant Park in Chicago.
Laut Live Nation The stage will have a battery storage capacity of over 1.5 MWh, reducing the use of biodiesel generators and achieving significant savings in fuel and emissions.
Lollapalooza as a pioneer
Jake Perry, Director of Operations and Sustainability at Lollapalooza event management company C3 Presents, says the goal is to create a more sustainable future for music festivals.
This requires bold steps and innovative solutions that change the way we work and strengthen the industry’s confidence in new technologies. Lollapalooza is taking a pioneering role in this. Perry adds:
“We are proud to have joined forces with partners who share the same passion and experience to accomplish this mission.”
Reduction of emissions
Lucy August-Perna, Head of Global Sustainability at Live Nation, added that sustainable solutions like those at Lollapalooza would not only help achieve the global Green Nation goal of halving emissions by 2030, but would also provide local benefits such as reduced noise and air pollution.
This will lead to an improved experience for artists, fans and crew. According to August-Perna, the insights gained will be shared with over 200 festivals worldwide to promote more sustainable live events.
Back to nature
The Lollapalooza festival, which won the Illinois Sustainability Award, is fully committed to sustainability. The festival recycles and composts, and offers many eco-friendly food options and hydration stations with free, filtered water.
This year, the festival is supported by Re:wild, an organization founded by respected natural scientists and Leonardo DiCaprio. Re:wild promotes a natural lifestyle and plant-based diet to combat the loss of biodiversity.
Together with Lollapalooza, Re:wild aims to speak directly to music fans and show them how they can make their everyday lives and communities more environmentally friendly.
In addition to Lollapalooza, several other players in the music industry are also increasingly striving for greater sustainability. For example, the band Coldplay managed to reduce their CO2 emissions on tours by almost 60 percent. The group even exceeded its original goals. Initiatives such as “Plant A Seed” and the commitment of Massive Attack are also setting positive standards for a greener live music scene.
