For the first time in years, more university students moved into rooms last year. Nearly 26,000 students moved from their parental home to a university city, reports the Central Bureau of Statistics. In previous years this number was around 22,000.
The increase is only partly explained by higher enrollment at universities; there was also an increase in relative terms last year.
According to the CBS, the increased number of registrations is related to the fact that the pass rate in secondary education was almost 100 percent last year, which also resulted in more students attending pre-university education. Due to the corona pandemic, many prospective students also postponed plans to go abroad for a year.
Last year, 19 percent of students living at home left home. The increase was particularly noticeable in Amsterdam (38 percent) and Utrecht (31 percent), but also in cities such as Leiden, Delft and Rotterdam.
