The fact that Rian Johnson is to develop a complete trilogy of his own after “Star Wars 8” seemed to have been buried quietly, quietly and secretly. But that is probably not the case. The films should keep coming.
The bestselling author Sariah Wilson had an hour-long conversation with “Star Wars 8” director Rian Johnson, from whom she posted pictures and excerpts on Twitter – including a statement that “Star Wars” fans should be particularly interested in.
As Johnson told her, his “Star Wars” trilogy is still being planned and will happen. There is no time frame yet, however, as the director is currently working on other projects.
Recently rumors made the rounds that Disney quietly, quietly and secretly shot down the “Star Wars” trilogy after the controversy surrounding “Star Wars 8: The Last Jedi”. After all, the project that was announced before the release of “Star Wars 8” was not mentioned with a single syllable in the most recent presentations (this also applies to other “Star Wars” projects that are still in progress).

So Johnson still has plans to make his trilogy and is confident that it will happen. Little is known about this new “Star Wars” series. But it should be detached from the main adventures.
Cinema release in 2023: Next “Star Wars” film comes from “Wonder Woman” director
While Rian Johnson is currently working on the crime sequel “Knives Out 2”, we already know that the next “Star Wars” film in the cinema will be made by “Wonder Woman” and “Wonder Woman 1984” director Patty Jenkins: “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron” is slated for release on December 20, 2023.
In addition, a joint “Star Wars” film by “Jojo Rabbit” director Taika Waititi and “1917” author Krysty Wilson-Cairns as well as a project by Marvel mastermind Kevin Feige are in the works.
Other “Star Wars” films: 2025 and 2027
Because the Waititi and Wilson-Cairns project was also mentioned at the recent Disney presentation, many insiders assume that this film could open on December 17, 2025. For the day, Disney has already announced the theatrical release of another “Star Wars” film.
A “Star Wars” movie release is also on the provisional calendar for December 15, 2027. This could be the start of the Johnson trilogy or the Feige project. The latter remained quiet in the end and all presentations were missing. But here, too, it was said that the project was still in progress (one author was only announced in early 2021).
