More sexual violence among young people during curfew

This is shown by research by Rutgers and Soa Aids Nederland. They looked at the influence of the corona crisis on sexual life.

Unacceptable behavior

8 percent of the girls experienced sexual violence during the curfew, compared to 3 percent for boys. That is more than during the following summer period (girls 5 percent, boys 1 percent). There was also more cross-border behavior online during the curfew. Young people received more unwanted sexually explicit images and requests.

“We have seen for years that far too much sexual violence is taking place,” said director Ton Coenen van Rutgers. “That violence increased during the curfew period is even more worrisome.” Sexual violence usually took place in the young people’s home, in the perpetrator’s home, at a party or when going out.

Thread picked up again

Young people have picked up the thread of their love and sex life again during the summer months, the researchers conclude. One in five young people who wanted to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases could not go for such an STI test because of corona.

Just like during previous lockdowns, singles had less sex during the curfew than before the corona crisis. With flirting, dating and sex, the ‘single people’ are now almost at the same level as before the corona crisis. It is striking that digital flirting and dating did not increase enormously during the corona crisis. The use of dating apps actually declined rather than increased.

The Rutgers and Soa Aids Nederland survey was conducted in September among nearly 2,500 young people between the ages of 16 and 24.
