More rules for debt collection agencies: rogue clubs curbed | Money

After the House of Representatives, the Senate also approved a bill for this on Tuesday, which the then Minister Sander Dekker (Legal Protection) submitted more than a year ago. Collection agencies will probably have to meet the new quality requirements as of 1 January.

The bill should put an end to the practices of rogue collection clubs, which pressure or intimidate customers, or demand more costs than is allowed. Collection agencies will also soon be required to communicate in understandable language. Agencies that break the rules can be fined or lose their license.

Currently, anyone can start a collection agency. Not all desks work equally well. But because of these rogue debt collection agencies, people with problematic debts get even deeper into trouble. Soon there will be a public register of all debt collection agencies that do have a permit that can be consulted free of charge, so that everyone can check whether an agency meets the requirements.

However, strict requirements are imposed on bailiffs. They follow a higher vocational education and are appointed by the Crown.
