“Why don’t you answer, you were just online!?” Pretty annoying when friends, partners or even work colleagues monitor our WhatsApp activity! But that could soon be over – because the WhatsApp messenger service is currently testing a new and pretty ingenious function to give its users more privacy in the future.

New feature so far only available as a test version

The “Last seen” function shows selected user groups when a WhatsApp user was last active on WhatsApp. So far, the messenger service only allowed you to share your status with certain groups: “Everyone,” “My Contacts” or “Nobody”. As the WhatsApp blog “WABetainfo” reports, that could change soon. A new feature is currently being tested that allows users to exclude certain people from their contacts from seeing their “last seen” status.

Anyone who has the new function can activate it via the following path, as “WABetainfo” reports:

  • Settings > Account > Privacy > Last seen > My contacts except…

From this point on, anyone who activates the option for individual contacts can no longer see when they were last active on WhatsApp.

Who can already use the new feature?

The test version of the new feature has been available to Android users for a few weeks now and is now also available for iPhone users with iOS update 22.9.0.70. If the test is successful, it is conceivable that the new “Last Seen” setting will soon be rolled out globally. Users with particularly curious contacts would certainly be happy about that. (and)
