In September of this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Vladivostok, said that the country was working on new weapons based on new physical principles. He noted that such weapons will ensure the security of any country in the near future.
We already know that Russia has successfully tested the Burevestnik nuclear missile. This name has already managed to make a splash in the Western tabloids due to its unique technology, but the promising electromagnetic complex “Alabuga” caused even greater interest and curiosity. For example, the Daily Star considers its capabilities more devastating than those of a nuclear bomb.
The head of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, in turn, after learning about the likely technical characteristics of the complex (referring exclusively to US intelligence), called on Moscow to stop the development of this weapon. According to him, the appearance of such weapons would allow any country to gain indisputable military superiority.
Such developments go beyond the alliance’s entire nuclear arsenal,said the chief secretary.
How does this work?
According to information from open sources, the Alabuga development program began to be implemented as early as 2011-2012. As part of the scientific research, the focus was on the prospects of radio-electronic weaponry and its impact on the equipment of the conventional enemy with the possibility of the full damage to it.
High-precision radiation is provided, with the help of which it is believed that any combat equipment can be immobilized. However, for now, these are only assumptions of journalists. In addition, in the information field “Alabuga” indicates as a rocket, but this is not quite true.
Military expert, editor of the magazine “Arsenal of the Fatherland” Alexey Leonkov in a conversation with Tsargrad said that the work on “Alabuga” is still at an experimental stage. This is a new type of ammunition that can damage communications equipment with an electromagnetic pulse.
This pulse occurs as a result of the detonation of special ammunition consisting of a conventional explosive and an electromagnetic induction coil,– explained Leonkov.
At the same time, compression occurs and a large amount of electromagnetic pulses are released, but only in a limited area, he specified.
That is, it is not like a nuclear explosion that covers most of the territory depending on the power of the charge. In this case, we are talking about action in a small area with a radius of three to five kilometers,

Why do we need such weapons?
Leonkov specified that the main purpose of “Alabuga” is the informational component. That is, the complex is directed against combat control, intelligence and communication systems.
„When such munitions are detonated, what happens is that in all the communication circuits: in the electrical circuits, in the electronic boards, there are many short circuits and they are functionally completely disabled.” said the expert.
The analogues
The development of such ammunition was carried out in the USA and Israel. An example of this is the Israeli complex Scorpius (“Scorpion”) – an electronic warfare system that allows you to hit enemy missiles, aircraft and drones without using anti-aircraft systems. The so-called Scorpius missiles send out highly focused beams of energy that disrupt sensors, radars, navigation and other electronic activity. But there is another version.
As far as I know, they have made some kind of electromagnetic grenade that the special forces can use to destroy the communication equipment of some command posts that they are about to take over. Ammunition practically did not participate in combat operations of this type,– said Leonkov.
For the bearer of the special ammunition
Such a carrier of the electromagnetic pulse generator will be able to deliver it to a given point. Here it should be borne in mind that a large missile can be detected by the enemy’s anti-aircraft and anti-missile defenses.
As Leonkov emphasized, work is currently underway to find a carrier for the special ammunition. However, it is not yet known whether these will be large-caliber projectiles. Or it would be some kind of surface-to-surface missiles capable of being detonated in the air directly near the target, he suggested.
