The New York State Department of Health found additional evidence of polio in New York City sewage.
Officials noted that 63 of the 70 sewage samples discovered last week were linked to a polio case in a 20-year-old man from Rockland County. The individual has since developed leg paralysis, according to the state health department.
Most of the samples were found in Rockland. Yet authorities also collected others across the state, including Orange County, Sullivan County, and Nassau County, and a sample was found in Brooklyn. All the samples found in New York were collected in August 2022.
Most adults are protected against polio, state health officials say, because many were fully immunized as children. However, the authorities recommend everyone to keep up to date with vaccinations.

If a person is not vaccinated against polio, the disease can cause death in some cases or permanent paralysis in parts of the body such as the arms or legs or both.
“These findings put an alarming exclamation mark on what we have already observed: Unvaccinated people are at real and unnecessary risk,” state commissioner for health, Dr Mary T. Bassett and Dr. New York City Health Commissioner, Dr. Ashwin Vasan. . “We’ve seen more New Yorkers get vaccinated. “
They added: “But these latest findings remind us that there is no time to waste, especially for young children, who need to be up to date with their vaccinations right away. Paralysis changes life forever. Fortunately, the answer is simple: get vaccinated against polio. “
