More people sick from their own kitchen food

In 2021, the Dutch Food and Consumer Products Safety Authority (NVWA) and the GGD received 14% more reports of food-borne infection outbreaks than in 2019. was prepared at home more outbreaks were reported than in the previous years.

When 2 or more people get sick from the same food, it is referred to as a food-related outbreak. Doctors and laboratories must report these outbreaks to the GGD.

Compared to 2020, in 2021 there was even a 50% increase, but in 2020 the number of infections was much lower. This probably has to do with anti-crown measures and advice such as washing hands or closing the restaurant business. This effect appears to have disappeared by 2021, even as people cook at home more often than before the corona outbreak and more outbreaks are reported at home.

In 2021, 838 outbreaks of infections and food poisoning were recorded, leaving 3,517 people ill. In 2020 there were 559 outbreaks with 1,907 patients, in 2019 there were 735 outbreaks and 3,058 patients.

The main causes of infections and poisonings remain the same; that was also in 2021 Campylobacter, Salmonella and norovirus.
