More patients with corona in hospital

From September 29 to October 5, an average of 59.4 COVID patients were hospitalized daily. This is an increase of 11 percent compared to the previous week, according to the daily report Wednesday from health institute Sciensano. Since the outbreak of the epidemic, 79,943 patients have already been hospitalized. Currently, 748 patients are in hospital (+7 pc), of whom 210 are in intensive care (+1 pc). Overall, 11 percent of recognized ICU beds in Belgium are occupied by COVID patients.

The average number of deaths per day is also on the rise. In the week up to and including October 2, an average of 8.3 patients died each day. Here is an increase of 7 percent compared to the previous week in the tables. All together, 25,640 people have already died from COVID-19.

However, the number of infections is decreasing. From September 25 to October 1, there is an average of 1,900 new cases per day, a decrease of 2 percent. The number of tests fell by an average of 7 percent in that period to almost 44,600. On the other hand, 4.7 percent of those tests are positive, a slight increase (+ 0.2 pc).

The reproduction number also increases, to 1.04 (+5 pc). A number above 1 indicates that the epidemic is gaining momentum. A total of 8,602,743 persons, or 75 pc of the total population, have received a first dose of a vaccine, of which 8,434,779 persons (73 pc) have been fully vaccinated. On 4 October, 72 percent of young people between the ages of 12 and 17 had received a first shot of a vaccine: 35 pc in Brussels, 85 pc in Flanders, 62 pc in Wallonia and 54 pc in the German-speaking Community.

Until October 4, 163,858 vulnerable people (people with reduced resistance, people in nursing homes and people over 65) also received a booster vaccine from Moderna or Pfizer/BioNTech.
