More new infections in Vienna; Mask requirement for doctor doubtful from June

Faßmann is starting: In the past few weeks there has been a lot of coordination with rectors and universities. The concept of starting up was “not correct” because the universities were not really closed. The term “get started” would be better.

Also valid: the general hygiene rules. Keep your distance, face mask, disinfection of workplaces, attaching instructions.

A priority is on exams. “We are at the beginning of the second half of the semester. Many are waiting impatiently.” Universities had focused on digital distance tests, and written tests were also held digitally. For this, questions had to be formulated differently. “You have to have learned, you have to know more.”

The number of large tests had been significantly reduced and these had to be planned accordingly – for example, with a sufficient distance between the test objects.

“Distance learning” worked very well – and will continue to do so, Faßmann believes. Two thirds say it worked well or very well. It didn’t work for only seven percent.

It has been agreed with the universities that “distance learning” will continue to take place this way. “But we also need classroom instruction.” About excavations in archeology.

Starting the research operation (laboratories, libraries, etc.) is comparatively uncomplicated – after all, it has never been completely reduced.

Larger symposia and specialist conferences would probably only take place again in a while.

Faßmann also mentioned problem areas:
The neutral semester was launched to relieve financial pressure on those receiving study grants. Deadlines have been extended, tolerances for family benefits have been expanded. Measures were quickly implemented to help poor students in particular.

The universities are doing everything possible to realize this semester, and as long as it runs, tuition fees should not be waived, says Faßmann.
