The annual figures from the Center for Crime Prevention and Security (CCV) also show that neighbors were troubled by each other, especially in larger cities where people live closer together. “We see that the corona crisis has a major impact on the quality of life,” said Frannie Herder, advisor for neighborhood mediation and housing nuisance at CCV.

“Now that everyone is at home more often, meets a lot online and the children were at home all day, everyone is also noticing more about their neighbors. You will get annoyed by sounds that have always been there. If the noise of a handy neighbor is added to that, the living pleasure decreases rapidly. ”

After noise nuisance, most reports were received about (alleged) bullying. “That could be gossip or a van that is always parked in front of someone’s window. This does not have to be on purpose, of course, but it can be experienced as bullying. Or another scratch on the car: that must have been the neighbor. ” In third place are ‘outdoor problems’: nuisance from the barbecue or from pets.
“Despite the fact that the work of neighborhood mediation organizations became more difficult because people could not meet physically because of the corona measures, most reports were picked up,” says Herder.
CCV has existed since 1996 and nowadays residents of 300 municipalities (85 percent of the 352 Dutch municipalities) can use this service free of charge. According to the center, the conflict is resolved in 7 out of 10 cases.
