The need is great. At least 30 sports and gyms are missing in Stuttgart – just to meet the current demand. Six of the seven ball game halls are now to be renovated.

Stuttgart – The youngest offspring of the Stuttgart ball game halls has got off to a difficult start, in winter water damage prevented the inauguration of the hall in Degerloch. Its six predecessors, however, have very different problems. Which is no wonder, since they are getting on in years. The hall in Plieningen was built in 1988, followed by Botnang and the Flatow hall in Wangen in 1993, the hall in Obertürkheim in 2002, the Spitalwaldhalle in Sillenbuch in 2005 and the hall in Neckarpark in 2012. Unlike the school sports halls, they are all run by the Sports Office and should primarily be available to clubs.

Also an energetic renovation

A comprehensive renovation is now being planned for all of these halls. They are also to be brought up to date in terms of energy by 2030. The building construction department has calculated that it will cost 20 million euros. It could start in 2023 with Botnang, in 2025 it could be Wangen, 2027 Plieningen and 2028 Sillenbuch, then Obertürkheim and the Halle am Neckarpark are on the agenda.

Now the sport politicians of the municipal council groups will have to convince their colleagues to provide money for the planning and renovations in the coming double budgets. Future savings through solar cells, LEDs and insulation should cover part of the costs.

There are no sports halls

The halls are urgently needed. There are 36 sports halls, 117 gyms and 49 gymnastics halls in Stuttgart. In order to compare this offer with the needs of the clubs, one calculates in practice units. Depending on the size of the hall, these are between 0.5 and three exercise units. In this way it can be calculated which areas are missing. There is no lack of capacity in school sports. In club sports, on the other hand, the need is only 75 percent covered. And it doesn’t get any better. For the next few years, the city statisticians are announcing an all-time high in the number of inhabitants – 649,000 in 2030. This would still cover 71.6 percent of the demand, which means that 91 exercise units are missing, i.e. at least 30 large halls.
