Collective bargaining in the public sector begins in Potsdam. According to the ver.di union, it is also about more money for up to 27,000 employees in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The trade union ver.di and the German Association of Civil Servants are calling for an increase of 10.5 percent, but at least 500 euros more per month. The employers call the demand excessive, but have not yet submitted an offer themselves. The employers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are represented in Potsdam by, among others, the district administrator in the district of Rostock, Sebastian Constien (SPD). He is the chairman of the presidium of the municipal employers’ association.

Household already burdened by energy prices

In Rostock alone, around 4,000 employees in the city administration, the three municipal companies and the municipal companies could benefit from an increase in wages and salaries. On the one hand, higher salaries would give the city advantages when looking for skilled workers, but on the other hand, the budget is already burdened by higher energy prices, according to the city administration.

Jobs in the public sector should become more attractive

Frank Schischefsky, press spokesman for ver.di Nord, emphasizes: “Public sector employees should not be left behind by wage developments in other areas, not least in the private sector.” It is also about making the job in the public sector, i.e. in the city administration or with the public utilities, more attractive. Because qualified people are also being sought there and you have to be able to keep up in the public service.
