In the USA, Axel Andersson, who was born in Sweden, learned everything there was to be learned about the mail order and direct marketing business in the 1940s. Later he worked as an independent consultant and entrepreneur in six countries. The Federal Republic of Germany, however, became his Dorado. This is where he finally settled.
At the end of the 1950s, Andersson became involved in distance learning in the Hanseatic city as an advertising consultant. According to the motto: No fee but 3% commission if 3 million marks in sales are reached. From a turnover of 7 million, he demanded 3.5% and an additional 25% stake in the company.
In the early 1970s he bought an unprofitable school of writing and increased its sales tenfold within a few years. He also became a franchisee for Linguaphone (Germany and Austria) and also founded a publishing house and an advertising agency.
At the end of 1986 Andersson sold his company to the Ernst Klett publishing house in Stuttgart, and three years later he took early retirement on the west coast of Florida. Since then he has been pursuing his hobby here, namely to determine and analyze “response boosters” for US direct marketing.
Andersson is best known in the USA for the Axel Andersson Awards, which have received all mailings since 1991 that are or have been unbeaten for three years or more. This award is now the most coveted among direct marketing professionals.
