The threshold for lens reimbursement will be lowered from a diopter of 8.25 to 7.75. For those younger than 18 or older than 65, the threshold is lowered from a diopter from 8 to 7.5. The measure will take effect on 1 June.

Federal Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health Frank Vandenbroucke (Vooruit) announced this on Sunday.
The lowering of the dioptre limit means that more patients are eligible for reimbursement for their spectacle lenses. According to Minister Vandenbroucke, 23,500 people will be able to benefit from the adjustment, a measure that costs 1.6 million euros annually. Tomorrow / Monday the amendment to the nomenclature for the reimbursement of spectacle lenses will be published in the Belgian Official Journal.
“Good vision is essential at any age. When glasses are not adjusted for vision or someone does not wear glasses when they are needed, it can lead to health problems, ”says Vandenbroucke. “In children, an uncorrected or insufficiently corrected myopia can cause problems at school, for example when reading the blackboard. This can quickly have a major impact on the child’s learning pace. “
The minister is pleased that more people will be able to enjoy a refund. “This improvement in reimbursement is another step in improving access to healthcare.”
