More investment in education required

GIESSEN – The Working Group of Social Democratic Women UB Gießen (ASF) dealt with the situation of childcare in day-care centers and schools in its last board meeting. Although the number of places has increased in recent years, many places are still lacking in town and country, writes the ASF in a press release.

Early childhood education is extremely important for equal opportunities for children. The lack of good care is also a major obstacle to equal opportunities for women in the labor market. Despite increasing qualifications, the proportion of women working part-time or in mini-jobs is still very high. This not only affects women’s opportunities for advancement, but also means enormous losses in terms of pensions and family income, especially for single parents. Child poverty in Germany is still alarmingly high.

“Federal Family Minister Franziska Giffey (SPD) has made several efforts in recent years to support day-care centers. Four federal investment programs in recent years (2008 to 2020) are intended to support the federal states in expanding day-care places. Not only those who run day-care centers, But the federal states in particular are called upon to increase these funds accordingly and implement them quickly, “said board member Gudrun Beekmann-Mathar.

The shortage of skilled workers in the daycare sector is also a major problem. The state government’s “Skilled Teachers Offensive” program is therefore an important step in creating practice-integrated, paid training for educators (PivA). Municipalities, church and social organizations urgently need further support, and at the school level the expansion of all-day schools is necessary. Here, too, the state of Hesse is required. “The social democratic women in the Giessen sub-district are therefore calling for further investment in education at all levels,” said Beekmann-Mathar.
