“Getting vaccinated against Covid means being responsible not only towards ourselves, but also towards the patients we care for”. Second Massimo Antonelli, director of the Anesthesia and Resuscitation Department of the Gemelli Polyclinic of Rome and member of Cts, for health workers, among the first to be able to receive serum, vaccination is in fact «the fundamental element of the professional behavior of every health worker».
Professor, is giving priority to those who care for the sick fundamental?
“Of course, it is absolutely important to protect all health workers, people who are in contact with the sick, since they are exposed daily. And then gradually, it will be necessary to vaccinate the entire population, to be able to completely defeat the virus “
All operators must be urged to get vaccinated, without hesitation.
“Definitely. I believe that it is essential to recall the sense of responsibility and the ethical duty of any health care worker towards patients and the people they are cared for. If it is true that one’s profession is dedicated to helping others, even more must think about protecting them. Only with vaccination will we be able to eliminate the risk of being the vehicle of contagion and infection “.
Yet there are still some unconvinced operators. Why?
“The reasons may be different. There is perhaps a certain amount of hesitation, entirely unjustified, due to the fact that these vaccines were developed in record time. Recall that in the past it took several years to reach the final production phase and the placing on the market and then the availability of the serums. These vaccines against Sars Cov 2 are the fruit of a formidable scientific and organizational effort all over the world. Thanks to the work and synergy of many pharmaceutical industries and scientists, as well as the use of new technologies, it has been possible to reduce the time. But the idea that reducing the time to make the serum can be a danger is actually a false problem. The safety was tested on reliable data by the regulatory agencies, the Fda, the EMA and the Aifa, which carefully examined all the data “.
Wouldn’t it have been the case to make them mandatory?
“It is a complex problem that refers to our constitutional rights, that is to be able to choose a therapy and therefore adhere to any form of treatment that is proposed to us. The point is, if anything, different: we need to appeal to a sense of responsibility and a sense of ethics, so that we realize that we are not only responsible towards ourselves, but also towards the patients we care for. Paradoxically, when a healthcare worker who refused the vaccine infects one of the residents of the residence, one could run into serious medico-legal problems ”.
So does the CTS appeal to everyone’s responsibility?
“The sense of responsibility and ethics, to which we must be called as health workers, are the founding elements of our professional behavior. The CTS can appeal to these elements, motivating them with solid scientific elements and supplementing the recommendations with data available to us ”.
However, even for the anti-flu campaign, the participation of operators has always been low.
“It’s a different problem. In this case, we know very well the danger of the virus and the risks of contagion. In addition of course to the number of deaths unfortunately caused by Covid. Remember, then, that if an operator does not get vaccinated and gets sick, resources and assistance are stolen from the population who most need it, in hospitals and in protected residences. I repeat, one’s sense of responsibility must prevail ”.
