More hospitals are taking measures against aggression in the corona department

Several hospitals are taking extra measures to prevent aggression on corona wards and to protect healthcare personnel. When transferring corona patients to another hospital, family members often react angrily and the transfer is not accepted.

After two incidents that were associated with aggression in connection with the transfer of patients, the measure is full for the Hague Medical Center. Additional security guards are now being deployed at all three locations of the hospital, driver Ingrid Wolf told the yesterday NRC. She said nurses had been threatened and that a lawyer appeared on the unit unannounced to demand that a patient not be moved.

Anger for rules

Hospitals such as the LUMC in Leiden, the AMC and the OLVG in Amsterdam and the Sint Jansdal Hospital in Harderwijk recognize the problems at the HMC. They let the NOS know that it also happens with them that family members react emotionally to transfer.

A spokesman for the Sint Jansdal Hospital says that extra security is being used to calm grim discussions. “We don’t have any transfers yet, but we do notice that there is anger about the rules that apply.”

To avoid unpleasant surprises and to inform patients in advance, patients from the two locations of the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis receive a letter immediately upon arrival stating that they can be transferred to another hospital. “In this way we try to create as much understanding as possible for the situation, so that patients also know that we are doing this to allow normal care to continue as much as possible.”
