Smokers may immediately get the tchick out of the corner of their mouth: as of March 1st, the usual varieties will also be 30 cents more expensive.
In recent years price increases for cigarettes of ten or twenty cents have been normal, this year many brands are going up by 30 cents. But not only JTI Austria will raise the prices (“Heute” reported), but also Altria Group (Philip Morris) with the very popular brands like Marlboro or Chesterfield.
As of March 1, Marlboro, Chesterfield, Camel and many more will cost 50 cents more than in March 2022. At that time, a pack of 20 Chesterfields cost 5.30 euros, Marlboro 5.80 euros. On May 1st, the Tschick prices were raised by 20 cents, now, 10 months later, by another 30 cents.

The reason for the price increase: The producers’ warehouses are empty, they now have to buy more expensive. Since the producers sometimes had large quantities in stock, there was a quasi-delayed increase in costs. Because in addition to the horrendous energy prices, the prices for paper and tobacco were also higher.
Almost 12 billion Tschick were sold in Austrian tobacconists in the previous year, more than a billion cigarettes were brought to Austria from abroad. Hamster purchases like in the past, for example in the Czech Republic or Hungary, hardly pay off anymore. Because the price level for Tschick is about the same in the Czech Republic, plus the expensive fuel prices.
From 3.70 to 5.80 euros
Just for comparison: in 2001 a box of Marlboros cost 3.20 euros, from March 1, 2023 almost twice as much at 6.30 euros. Even a good 10 years ago, the Tschick prices were quite moderate. As of December 31, 2011, a good eleven years ago, a pack of 20 Chesterfields cost 3.70 euros. As of March, a package will cost 2.10 euros more: 5.80 euros.
