American car manufacturers will have to improve the energy performance of their models by 5 to 10% per year between 2023 and 2026. New rules which aim in part to accelerate the deployment of electric vehicles.
The new standards are a step backwards after the strong easing granted under the presidency of Donald Trump. The environmental protection agency requires cars, including SUVs and pickups, to be able to travel 64.5 kilometers in real traffic conditions on a single gallon – or about 4 liters of fuel. That’s much more than the 51.5 kilometers per gallon expected during the Trump era. It is even more than what the Obama administration demanded.
But beware, this is an average. Some vehicles will consume more, others less. To get into the nails, manufacturers will have to improve the performance of their heat engine models. The other option available to them is to sell more electric cars.
Government support suspended for Biden plan in bad shape
To achieve these goals, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation is asking for government support. Investments to green the automotive industry are planned in the Build Back Better plan. Problem: This $ 1.7 trillion plan is in bad shape. Democratic Senator Joe Manchin refuses to support him. However, without his voice, the Democrats no longer have a majority in the Senate.
Anyway, for the Union of concerned Scientist, the new standards are still not ambitious enough.
