More Dutch people travel by international train except to Spain

MADRID – International train ticket sales have been on the rise for months and more and more Dutch people are seeing the benefits of traveling by train to a holiday destination. According to NS International, 372,000 tickets were sold in June, which is 30,000 more than in the same month in 2019. Unfortunately, few people go on holiday to Spain by train, if that is possible at all.

The most sold train tickets are for the Thalys to Paris, the intercity to Berlin and the Eurostar to London. This concerns trains during the day, but the supply and popularity of night trains has also increased. Antwerp, Brussels and Paris are the most popular among the Dutch, while Vienna, Zurich, Milan and Copenhagen have become more popular this year.

The big disadvantage is that there is little supply and mainly to the large cities closer to the Netherlands. For example, if you want to travel to Spain by train, it becomes a more difficult story like we do HERE described.

However, it is possible, without transfer, on Saturday from July 9 to August 27 directly from the Netherlands with the Sun Thalys to Marseille in the south of France. In other months and days, this happens with a transfer in Paris or Brussels. The Sun Thalys has Marseille as its final destination, but also stops in Valence and Avignon where you can take the Spanish AVE high speed train to Barcelona.
