A total of four referendums in parallel to the state elections
Next Sunday not only will all Baden-Württemberg citizens be called to the state elections, but four municipalities will also be asked to vote for referendums. This also includes the 600th referendum in the country’s history.
A cultural change can be seen: In Gundelfingen, the scene of the 600th decision in the state’s history, but also in Löwenstein, Grünkraut and Hirschberg, a constructive and accommodating approach to citizens’ concerns can be seen: in three of the municipalities, for example, the municipal council decided to accelerate and facilitate the process to schedule a referendum instead of waiting for a referendum.
“The fact that a referendum by mayors and local councils is often seen as a nuisance at first is understandable. But it has evidently got around that blockade is not a good option,” says Edgar Wunder, state spokesman for Mehr Demokratie in Baden-Württemberg.
