New tram lines, new trains. The Strasbourg network is about to expand with the western extensions in 2025 and the northern extensions in 2027. To strengthen service on the network, new latest generation trains will be put into service.
It is the Citadis 3 model from the French manufacturer Alstom which was selected by the CTS and the Eurométropole. The first twelve trainsets of this new model have been ordered and will be delivered in the first half of 2025.
“These new trains, both more efficient and eco-responsible, illustrate our ambition to offer everyone a public transport network that meets the climate and mobility challenges of our region, welcoming more than 361,000 travelers every day” , declared Pia Imbs, the president of the Eurométropole of Strasbourg, upon the announcement of this order.

45 meters long, with a width of 2.40 meters, these new trains will be more spacious. With a capacity of 286 passengers, they will have more seats: 72 compared to 60 or 64 for previous generations of Citadis already in operation on the network. Additional folding seats are in fact added to the back of the driver’s cabins to allow this gain.
Space saving also in intercircular spaces, to allow better movement for people with reduced mobility. Entry into the train will be made easier for them thanks to eight double doors with a width of 1.30 m per side. The height of the door opening buttons has been redesigned and the spaces that can accommodate wheelchairs or strollers will be larger.
Alstom promises more comfort to travelers, thanks in particular to “fully glazed doors to accentuate the feeling of comfort and security“, details the manufacturer. Air-conditioned, the trains will be equipped with a more dynamic information system for passengers and a video surveillance system. They should also be quieter.
Another commitment from the manufacturer: the Citadis 3 trams are intended to be more environmentally friendly. Alstom announces a reduction in energy consumption of at least 20% compared to current equipment. A benefit made possible thanks to a new engine, improved climate comfort management and 100% LED lighting. Alstom also highlights the efforts put forward in construction with materials that are 95% recyclable and 99% reusable.

These Citadis will be the fourth generation of trams in circulation in Strasbourg since the relaunch of this mode of transport in 1994. The 12 expected trains will be added to the 107 already in circulation on the network. They will be able to circulate on all lines of the network.
Their commissioning is announced for the end of 2025.
