Real closes a total of 38 branches

The deforestation at Real continues. After the takeover of the Russian investor SCP, the hypermarket chain has to close further branches. While there were now 28 locations that had to close, there are now a total of 38 branches for which there are apparently no longer any prospects. However, there is justified hope for six locations that things will continue with a new operator after the closure.

These Real branches will have to close in 2022

The following locations are new to the list, which Real updated on September 20:

  • Amberg, closed on May 31, 2022 due to renovation work before handover
  • Bayreuth, Riedinger Straße, will be closed on March 31, 2022 due to renovation work before handover
  • Hemer, closed on June 30, 2022
  • Pfarrkirchen, closed on June 30, 2022
  • Sinzheim, closed on June 30, 2022 due to renovation work before handover
  • Tübingen, closed on May 31, 2022 due to renovation work before handover
  • Tuttlingen, closed on April 30, 2022 due to renovation work before handover
  • Weiden, closed on May 31, 2022 due to renovation work before handover

In any case, the Real branches in Hemer and Pfarrkirchen will have to close completely. The Amberg, Bayreuth, Sinzheim, Tübingen, Tuttlingen and Weiden locations will initially be closed. However, there are “plans by the new operator that include far-reaching conceptual and structural changes,” said a Real spokesman for the Lebensmittel Zeitung. Real did not want to name the successors yet. One thing is certain, however: there will be no classic re-flagging at the six locations in which the successor moves into the branch with its own range. According to information from the Schwäbisches Tagblatt in Tübingen, a new commercial area is to be built on the Real-Markt area, in which a local supplier is also planned. For the 78 employees, there is a social plan, Real told the regional newspaper.

The employees of the Real hypermarket chain in the following 10 locations were informed of the respective closure at the beginning of May:

  • Bayreuth, closed on January 31, 2022
  • Bremen-Vahr, closed on March 31, 2022
  • Espelkamp, closed on March 31, 2022
  • Essen, Porscheplatz, closed on March 31, 2022
  • Hamelin, closed on January 31, 2022
  • Monschau, closed on March 31, 2022
  • Oldenburg-Kreyenbrück, closed on January 31, 2022
  • Trier, closed on January 31, 2022
  • Wetzlar, closed on January 31, 2022
  • Wiesbaden, closed on January 31, 2022

Ten Real branches have already had to close, ten more locations will close in 2021

The Russian Real owner SCP had acquired the ailing hypermarket chain with its around 270 stores from Metro last year in order to break up and resell it. During the takeover, SCP had already signaled that around 30 businesses were threatened with extinction. In June of last year, Real announced that it would close several branches on January 31st. The following Real markets are already closed:

  • Augsburg-Königsbrunn, closed since January 31, 2021
  • Berlin-Spandau, closed since June 30, 2021
  • Bitterfeld-Wolfen, closed since January 31, 2021
  • Duisburg-Süd, closed since January 31, 2021
  • Frankenthal, closed since January 31, 2021
  • Goslar, closed since January 31, 2021
  • Herten-Westerholt, closed since January 31, 2021
  • Leißling-Weißenfels, closed since January 31, 2021
  • Mönchengladbach-Rheydt, closed since January 31, 2021
  • Rheine, closed since June 30, 2021

This was followed in January by the announcement of ten more branches that will have to close by September 30, 2021:

  • Ansbach, closed on September 30, 2021
  • Cuxhaven, will be closed on September 30, 2021
  • Dortmund-Eving, closed on September 30, 2021
  • Hannover-Linden, closed on September 30, 2021
  • Haßloch, closed on September 30, 2021
  • Kenn, closed on September 30, 2021
  • Maintal, closed on September 30, 2021
  • Mönchengladbach-Neuwerk, will be closed on September 30, 2021
  • Neustadt an der Aisch, closed on September 30, 2021
  • Villingen-Schwenningen, will be closed on September 30, 2021

The reason for the end: There is no longer any economic perspective for the affected markets. The company explains that there was no interested party to take over the locations.

Kaufland, Edeka and Globus take over most of the branches – and employees

Buyers have been found for most of the Real branches; they go to the supermarket chains Kaufland, Edeka and Globus. The new owners also take over all Real employees on the shelf. The entire overview of the branches for which a decision has already been made can be found in this article. (aze)
