More cases of mysterious hepatitis in children in Italy

The number of cases of acute hepatitis of unclear origin in children is increasing in Italy. Eleven cases have already been reported, Italian media reported. Two children, aged eleven and five, were hospitalized in the Lombard city of Bergamo with liver infections. The older child had to undergo a liver transplant.

The Italian health authorities want to check whether the number of cases of acute hepatitis in children has increased compared to previous years. Experts ruled out a link between anti-Covid vaccines and the cases of acute hepatitis: none of the children diagnosed with the disease in the past few days have been vaccinated against the coronavirus, the Italian Medical Association reported.

In the meantime, the condition of a four-year-old boy who was admitted to the “Bambino Gesu” hospital in Rome because of acute hepatitis a few days ago has improved. A liver transplant is not necessary, the child’s condition is constantly improving, the doctors said.

The EU health authority ECDC will also deal with the topic on Tuesday. In addition to the unusual cases of hepatitis in children, a press conference also deals with Covid-19 and salmonella in chocolate products.
