The National Basketball Association (NBA) has canceled further games due to the coronavirus crisis. The Boston Celtics’ duel with Orlando Magic, scheduled for Wednesday, could not take place because the Celtics did not get to the minimum of eight usable players through coronavirus tests and contact tracing, the league announced on Tuesday.
The Celtics games against Miami Heat and the Chicago Bulls have also been canceled since Sunday. Hours later, the NBA also canceled the Utah Jazz game against the Washington Wizards. The game was also scheduled for Wednesday. The reason for this is the contact tracking with the wizards and the associated lack of available players.
Stricter rules introduced
In the wake of the increasing number of positive coronavirus tests, the NBA has also agreed with the NBAPA players’ union on stricter rules for dealing with the pandemic. For example, players on the bench must wear a mouth and nose cover at all times and may only do without it in a separate area immediately after substitutions or before substitutions.
The basketball players also have to be at home as often as possible for at least the next two weeks. Players should only leave their houses and apartments for training, outdoor sports, necessary errands or exceptional circumstances. During away games, players are prohibited from leaving the hotel for anything other than training or a match. Contact with hotel guests who are not part of the team is also prohibited.
