Miami, December 25 (EFE).- Florida’s major airports continue to pile up cancellations over the weekend despite the fact that winter storm Elliot, which froze the United States in the middle of the Christmas holidays, has started to subside this Sunday, although temperatures in the “sunny state” remain unusually low.
The FlightAware site, which provides real-time aerial information, highlights that Florida’s most important airport, the city of Orlando, has recorded a total of 45 canceled flights to that airport so far this Sunday, which represents 8% than expected.
Tampa airport, one of the most important cities in Florida, located on the west coast of the state, has already recorded 20 cancellations of direct flights to that destination, 8% of those scheduled, as in Orlando.
The one in Fort Lauderdale, about 40 kilometers north of Miami, has suffered 20 cancellations of flights destined for it, 7% of those scheduled for today, Sunday, Christmas Day.
The city of Miami airport, located in the southeastern tip of Florida, which usually experiences warmer weather than the rest of the state, saw 9 flights canceled, just 1 percent of those scheduled for Sunday.
The city of Miami, which receives visitors from all over the United States during the Christmas period because it usually allows even the coldest winter months to enjoy warm temperatures that invite you to visit its beaches, recorded 45 degrees Fahrenheit in the early hours of the day ( 7 degrees Celsius), well below the eternal summer of the “sun state”.
With freezing nighttime temperatures expected to dip below 30 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius) in counties like Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough, officials have decided to open shelters over the holiday weekend.
The Florida authorities have asked the population not to commit the imprudence of collecting frozen iguanas to take them home with the aim of reviving them, given the danger this can entail.
The US National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts this Christmas Sunday for the United States as a whole that the Arctic front is “slowing eastward and weakening,” leaving still low temperatures and some snowfall
