The corona pandemic is apparently also having an impact on bicycle theft: In Hamburg, contrary to the nationwide trend, more bicycles have been stolen.
According to the General Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV), 14,577 bikes were reported as stolen in the Hanseatic city in 2020 – 20 percent more than in the previous year. According to GDV data, there was no such high increase in any other federal state.
Balance in Hamburg worse than Berlin
There are 789 stolen bikes per 100,000 inhabitants – this puts Hamburg in second place behind Bremen, where the theft rate was 876. Berlin is now only in third place. The national average is 314 stolen bikes per 100,000 inhabitants.
When presenting their crime statistics, the Hamburg police came to the conclusion that there have been more opportunities for theft in the Hanseatic city since the corona pandemic, because cycling here had increased by 33 percent in the past year. The bikes would be stolen, especially in public spaces.
Nationwide, the trend is down
According to crime statistics, 260,000 bikes were stolen nationwide – around 5,000 fewer than in the previous year. The GDV assumes that fewer bikes are left unattended outdoors during the Corona period because people stay at home more often. The amount of damage in 2020 was unchanged at 110 million euros, mainly because more e-bikes are reported as stolen, which are more expensive than a normal bike.
