Strong increase

Digital police station: More Basel residents are making their reports online

The Basel-Stadt cantonal police expect over 7,000 online reports this year. The reason for the increase is the new website.

The police stations in Basel-Stadt are not always open. Many of those affected therefore choose the online reporting route.

Since the cantonal website was relaunched in mid-August, it has been possible to file reports if several items have been stolen. An example of this is that a thief steals your bag and then your wallet, keys, cell phone and umbrella can be reported. This adjustment on the website is one of the reasons for the “strong increase” in online advertisements, as the Basel-City cantonal police wrote in a statement on Thursday. Until mid-October there are more than that Police online form 126 multiple offenses were reported.

By the end of June, the authorities counted 3,457 online advertisements. “It can be assumed that over 7,000 will be received for the first time in 2024,” the statement says. In 2023 there were a total of 6,015 online advertisements. In contrast, there have been around 12,800 reports at the physical counter of a police station in the last 365 days.

The following offenses can be reported via the Suisse ePolice online platform:

  • Damage to property
  • theft
  • Loss of control plate
  • Weapon acquisition or transfer

The classified ads via online form are an important tool for the Basel police “to increase customer friendliness and at the same time gain resources for police work on the streets”. People who want to file a report would also save themselves any waiting time, according to the canton’s website.

A look at the crime statistics from 2023 shows: Last year, 28,574 crimes against the criminal code were recorded. Of these, 33.6 percent were cleared up. Most crimes related to property – including theft, robbery, fraud or damage to property. The public prosecutor’s annual report also states: “The number of criminal complaints has increased significantly since 2022.” Since the criminal police and the cantonal police are very busy, this leads to a high mountain of pending work.
