It started with sesame seeds, followed by spices such as ginger and turmeric and in the meantime the carcinogenic substance ethylene oxide has even been found in ketchup, ice cream and cheese spreads. The Belgian food watchdog FASFC has one product after another removed from the store shelves. Are we facing a new food crisis? “There is no acute toxicity”, says Professor Jan Tytgat (KU Leuven), “but there is cause for concern in the long term.”
