Not only wood and pellet stoves, but also the ‘old fashioned’ oil stove is on the rise now that gas prices are so high. They are hard to find in hardware stores, and even camping shops note that there is a lot more demand for them. The price of oil is now skyrocketing.
“Now you pay around 3 euros per liter for pure oil, in a month it could be just 4 euros,” says Mathé Nanne, of the fuel trade of the same name. “Demand is already on the rise and in view of the winter there is a lot of talk about oil. Prices are skyrocketing.”
But according to Nanne, heating with a kerosene stove is even cheaper than with gas. “So you’re talking about a room in the house, of course.”
At Obelink, which they say is the largest camping shop in Europe, they have recently seen a clearly growing interest in oil-fired heaters. “We always sell it for winter camping. But for about a month there has been a lot more demand. So we put more information about it on the site, because people want to know how it works. And there are certainly risks associated with it. “, the company spokesman warned.
Not all oil – or gas for that matter – stoves are suitable for indoor use. “The same goes for fuel,” Obelink says. They sell odorless oil in 20-liter containers for kerosene stoves. “All the camping shops have it.”
The most common oil heater is the laser heater
The Nanne fuel trade also has a slightly less pure variant in the house. “It is also suitable for indoor use, but you can smell it when you turn on the stove.” According to Nanne, a heater – as a side heater – consumes one and a half to 2 liters per day. “If you turn it on every day, it would cost around 120 euros a month to heat a room.”
A spokesperson for Praxis hardware stores says it’s not just the demand for kerosene stoves, the most common variant of which is touted as a laser stove. “This also applies to pellet, wood and electric stoves.” Everything is still available.
According to the Nanne fuel trade, there is even more demand for coal. “Oil is still readily available, but coal is nearly impossible to obtain.”
