It is not the first time that a country has tried to put pressure on the European Union through migrants. “It happened before, for example, in Libya, at the time of Gaddafi. Or in Turkey, last March,” says Thomas Spijkerboer, professor of migration law at the VU University Amsterdam. Another recent example is the flow of migrants from Morocco to Spain last May, via the exclave of Ceuta.
“With this asylum policy, the European Union has made itself highly dependent on the surrounding countries, which have to stop people from coming to the border with EU Member States. That seems like a very smart idea, but if ‘third countries’ do not comply with it , then the price you pay for it is this vulnerability.”
