In November, approximately 70,000 employees in the healthcare sector were unable to find work every day, Vernet estimates. Absenteeism in that month was 16 percent higher than in November 2019. The figures exclude employees who were in home quarantine or awaiting a test result due to the corona outbreak.
The absenteeism figures rose fastest in the Randstad compared to last year. In that region, 18.9 percent more absenteeism was reported in November than in the same month in 2019. At the end of January 2021, Vernet will publish absenteeism figures for December and the entire fourth quarter of this year.
Vernet conducts research among employees of hospitals, institutions for mental health care, care for the disabled and care, nursing and home care. In total, around 930,000 people work in these sectors according to the knowledge network. Academic hospitals were not included in the study.
Vernet’s research covers about 80 percent of employees in Dutch hospitals, academic hospitals excluded. About 70 to 75 percent of the employees from care for the disabled and mental health care were included in the survey and about 55 percent from nursing home and home care. A spokesperson for Vernet cannot say which healthcare institutions provided data for the research.
