More and more garbage ends up in the used clothing bins – district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald

In the corona pandemic, the used clothes containers are more full than ever. And according to the German Red Cross, a lot of rubbish ends up in it. It will therefore be expensive for the organization.

Actually a good facility: used clothing containers that are set up by aid organizations so that well-preserved items of clothing can find new owners. But apparently more and more rubbish ends up in the containers – also in Freiburg and the region, as the Freiburg German Red Cross (DRK) announced.

Set up to collect and recycle valuable textile raw materials, the containers are increasingly being misused for the disposal of household waste, electrical appliances and bulky waste, writes the DRK district association in Freiburg. Clothes that are in good condition would be soiled and unusable for further recycling. A study by the Federal Association of Secondary Raw Materials and Recycling confirms this development.

Expensive waste disposal causes economic damage

Udo Freudling, employee of the company Terec-Textilrecycling, points out in the message that this illegal waste disposal could be fined by the authorities. More and more citizens reacted indignantly to the mountains of rubbish and pressed for remedial action, it continues.

For a charitable organization like the German Red Cross, the loss of valuable old textiles and the high costs of garbage disposal meant enormous economic damage, which could lead to containers being dismantled in the long term. To avoid this, clothes containers should only be used for textiles. The DRK emphasizes that garment bags should not be placed in front of them.
