It has been known for some time that the coronavirus is more dangerous for pregnant women than for non-pregnant women. But it has only recently become clear that the Delta variant is even more dangerous. Last week alone, at least five pregnant women with corona ended up in intensive care. All of them have not yet received a corona vaccination. Experts are sounding the alarm, because the most important way to prevent serious illness from corona is to get a shot. This is reported by the Volkskrant, NOS and Trouw.

Gynecologist Hans Duvekot of the Covid-19 & Pregnancy working group said the same in de Volkskrant today as Professor Kitty Bloemenkamp of UMC Utrecht and obstetrician Betty Franke said earlier this week: it is important that pregnant women are vaccinated. The number of pregnant women with corona has increased in academic hospitals. Never before have five unvaccinated pregnant women with corona ended up in intensive care in one week.
Total admissions
Since the start of the pandemic, 574 women have been expected to be hospitalized because of Covid-19. 66 of them were in intensive care and 55 ended up in the obstetric high care wards, where pregnant women with complications lie.
Authorities emphasize the safety of the mRNA vaccines for pregnant women. They do not have to fear a miscarriage: the chance of a miscarriage after vaccination is the same as for women who have not been vaccinated with the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.
