More and more employees opt for the bicycle | Inland

In January 2022, 8.43 percent of employees cycled to work, compared to 6.41 percent in January 2021. In February this was 8.04 percent of employees, compared to 6.84 percent in February of 2021.

“The maximum amount that an employee may receive per kilometer to be free of social security contributions and taxes was 0.24 euros in 2021, from this year it will be 0.25 euros,” says Veerle Michiels, legal adviser at SD. worx. “The granting of the bicycle allowance is not a legal obligation, which means that the actual number of cycling commuters may be much higher.”

Over the full year 2021, the share of employees with a bicycle allowance rose to 15.73 percent, compared to 14.96 percent the year before. East Flanders is the leader (19.19 percent), followed by Antwerp (17.49 percent), West Flanders (15.14 percent), Limburg (12.72 percent), Flemish Brabant (7.75 percent) and Brussels (5.54 percent). A lockdown and teleworking did mean that the total number of kilometers cycled fell by a fifth in 2021. The average bicycle commuter received 72 euros bicycle allowance in 2021, compared to 92.16 euros in 2020.
