more air conditioning use, more cold juices are sold

The intense heat wave in the last five days claimed the life of a person in New York due to hyperthermia and forced millions to keep the air conditioning on.

“I have two airs and I have both on because of the immense heat it is,” said José Minaya, a resident of Queens.

Since last Friday, the Conedison electric company had asked Queens residents to conserve energy. Put the air in “low consumption” mode so as not to overload the networks.

Minaya and his wife expect an almost 50% increase in their next bill, because they kept using them.

“I think so, that I will have to pay more. But one is not going to stop turning on the air because, imagine with this heat, how does one sleep?” added Minaya.

This Sunday the mercury reached 96 degrees, but the wind chill felt between 104 and 105.

Many chose to go to the beach where they could, and the Parks department extended the closure of public pools until 8 p.m.

Those who work on the street, on the other hand, had to cover their businesses with tents and umbrellas. Enduring the intense heat to be able to sell and satisfy others.

“Yes, these days I have sold too much because it is very hot… and people spend time with their family and friends and, well, who doesn’t want to drink a cold juice?” said Adaline Sánchez.

María Armira works as a street cook in Corona.

“I have to put up with the heat; I don’t sweat much. I’m from the coast,” Armira said.

A few meters away, the Juice Bar restaurant suffered a reduction in the sale of food but not in drinks.

“I’ve had more fluids and eaten less,” said client Claudia Cano.

“What sells the most is like sodas, water, shakes like that,” explained employee Juan David Moreno.

Summer in New York is barely halfway through. Authorities encourage people to remain careful, drink fluids and call 311 for guidance on how to stay safe.
