There are approximately one million patients with type 2 diabetes in the Netherlands. Due to damage to blood vessels and nerve tissue, these patients often develop complications in the long run. The most important are cardiovascular disease and renal dysfunction.
Heart and vascular disease
Nivel researchers made use of GP registrations from the Nivel Primary Care Registers. This also includes data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) with regard to data on hospital admissions, kidney function replacement treatments. They also looked at mortality for the risk of cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes with and without kidney damage.
Patients with diabetes and kidney damage have a 1.4 times higher chance of being admitted for a stroke. For heart failure and a heart attack, this risk is respectively 2.9 and 1.5 times higher than people without diabetes. Every 10,000 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and kidney damage, about 650 patients die. Out of 10,000 patients, 4 received a kidney transplant and 52 received dialysis. The number of hospitalizations and deaths, as well as the number of dialysis and kidney transplants, increases with the severity of kidney damage.
kidney damage
Because kidney damage can be limited by good treatment, the study results give an impression of potentially preventable complications with optimal treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes.
