The morbid obesity and the coronavirus deaths have a statistically significant relationship, reported the University of Alabama after conducting a study and publishing it in the journal World Medical and Health Policy.
The obesity increases the possibility of suffering respiratory infections and have lung difficulties, therefore, patients with COVID-19 who are also overweight suffer more serious conditions that, practically, most require them to be connected to a ventilator.
“Health professionals and policy makers need to understand the influence that morbid obesity has on the negative outcomes of COVID-19, to respond to this and similar emerging infectious diseases in the future ”, said the University of Alabama geography professor Kevin Curtin, participant in the investigation.
The study analyzed the cases of adults between 18 and 64 years old and highlighted that morbid obesity explains 9% of the variation in the percentages of deaths of infected people.
The findings suggest that areas with higher obese populations use more resources for effective treatment, he says. Lisa Pawloski, professor of anthropology and co-author of the work.
