Morales says there is a “coup attack” against Maduro – 2024-08-02 02:37:57

The former president of Bolivia Evo Morales (2006-2019) expressed this Tuesday its “solidarity” with the Government of Nicolas Maduro in the face of what he considered a “new coup attack” against him, due to the social protests unleashed in Venezuela following the announced victory of the president in the presidential elections in that country.

“We strongly condemn the new coup attempt against the legally and legitimately constituted government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela”wrote on the social network X the leader of the government Movement Towards Socialism (MAS).

Morales, who was a political ally of the late president Hugo Chavez and also Maduro, pointed to the “international right”, the Organization of American States (OAS)“large corporations and various media outlets,” who in his opinion “are trying to reverse by force what the people voted for at the polls.”

Venezuelan Defense Minister, Vladimir Godfather Lopezdenounced this Tuesday a coup d’état “forged again” by “extremist right-wing fascist factors”, in reference to the protests unleashed in recent hours in several regions of the country, in rejection of the result of Sunday’s elections.

Nicolás Maduro, in power since 2013, was announced as re-elected president by the National Electoral Council (CNE) Venezuelan with 51.2% of the votes, while the standard-bearer of the majority opposition, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutiaobtained 44.2% of the votes, according to the same source.

The disputed official results of the presidential elections in Venezuela sparked protests in Caracas and several regions of the country on Monday, some of which were repressed by the military, while the majority opposition ratified the “victory” of González Urrutia.

At least 749 people have been arrested in Venezuela in the last few hours following the numerous protests, which also resulted in 48 police officers and soldiers injured, as well as the death of a member of the Armed Forces, according to information from the Attorney General, Towing William Saab.

Saab did not speak about the injuries suffered by the protesters, who were repelled with tear gas and pellets used by the public force, as confirmed by EFE in Caracas. (I)
