Peace., Former president Evo Morales advances this Monday on La Paz along with thousands of followers, in a tense protest that began a week ago against the government of Luis Arce due to the economic crisis and an alleged attempt to torpedo his presidential candidacy.
Morales leads what he has called the “march to save Bolivia” against Arce, his Minister of Economy during the 13 years he held power (2006-2019) and with whom he is now contesting the presidential nomination of the ruling party ahead of the elections. of 2025.
On Sunday, in a televised message, Arce warned Morales that he would not give him the “taste of a civil war,” after clashes with sticks and stones between protesters from both sides that left 34 injured in the midst of the opposition protest, according to official figures.
Prior to the arrival of the march from the neighboring city of El Alto, the police blocked access to the government headquarters, while hundreds of people close to Arce gather in the surrounding area awaiting the eventual entry of Morales and his followers.
“We come to defend democracy so that the brother president can fulfill his mandate. We don’t want him to be harmed. Brother Evo Morales’ group is coming to harm,” Lourdes Calizaya, leader of the Council of Peasant Federations of the Yungas, told AFP.
The mobilization against the government – which according to Morales brings together some 15,000 people – is expected to concentrate in the Bolivian capital in the afternoon, at the end of a route of about 190 km through the Bolivian highlands.
“Our march is to say enough of corruption, of a family government, of covering up drug trafficking, of destroying the people’s economy and attacking our social organizations,” Morales wrote this Monday on his social networks.
